Hackers Celebrate Security Exploits, Failures, Successes at 2011 Pwnie Awards. By Fahmida Y. Rashid

At Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, hackers with hats of all colors—black, white and gray—all gather to celebrate the year’s most spectacular failures and exciting bug discoveries at the Pwnie Awards. The various categories recognize individuals, businesses, malware and its discoverers that have dominated security headlines from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010. While Sony may have the lock on the Most Epic FAIL category, the Most Epic 0wnage category is up for grabs. Regardless of who wins, attendees will be wondering who will accept the gold-painted My Little Pony prize. Will LulzSec or Anonymous send a representative? Bradley Manning is in custody. Will there be a WikiLeaks employee? Who will take the credit for Stuxnet? While major firms are being named for their security failures, the bulk of the awards go to security researchers recognizing their hard work identifying vulnerabilities and publicizing them. Below are the nominees for each category and the eventual winner as announced at the Pwnie Awards in Las Vegas on Aug. 3.
